Tuberculosis is a contagious bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs. It is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. This disease has been a major public health concern for centuries and continues to be a significant global health issue. Tuberculosis remains a significant global health threat, but with proper diagnosis, treatment, and prevention measures, it is possible to control the spread of this disease. In this case, awareness building, and need-based and regular medical attention can prevent the disease susceptibility. The Government of India has taken several proactive steps to eradicate tuberculosis (TB) from the country by introducing National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP) during 1997 and the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP) in 2006. Even the GoI has joined hands with corporate houses to improve TB care across the nation.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, through Central TB Division, has introduced the ‘Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan’ (PMTBMBA) campaign where the community is encouraged to adopt TB patients and support them in the form of nutritional support, nutritional supplements, additional investigations, and vocational support for a minimum period of six months or maximum period of up to three years. Under this programme a donor is called Nikshay-Mitra. Nikshay-Mitras can be Individuals, NGOs, Co-operative societies, Cooperates, Political parties, and the like. A Mitra can adopt a minimum of one consented TB patient on treatment for a minimum period of six months for any kind of support they want to give to the patient. Such palliative care of GoI, towards health improvement of TB patients have shown tremendous impact.
